Elk Steak
Elk steak is one of the healthiest meats available. It is very lean and high in protein, with a great flavor.
Elk steak offers distinct advantages to consumers who would like to limit their cholesterol and saturated fat intake and still enjoy the great taste and many unique nutritional benefits of red meat. With less cholesterol than skinless chicken, elk meat is really a heart smart yet flavorful product that can become a mainstay of a healthy diet.
Elk can be found in several different cuts like elk roast, ground elk for elk burgers, elk steaks, and elk jerky. Comparing beef to elk the fat ratios for like cuts is consistently 2.9 to 0.8. Elk meat does not marble.
Care should be taken, with elk recipes, to not over-cook the meat to prevent the meat from drying out and to ensure it is tender and flavorful. Using your favorite slow cooker recipe for less tender cuts will result in a delicious meat that you can cut with a fork.
When barbecuing or pan frying for elk recipes, sear the meat on high heat to seal in the juices, then continue cooking on lower heat to the desired finish. When making elk recipes plan for faster cooking times compared to other red meats.
Another tip is to massage the meat with either olive oil or canola oil, mixed with herbs and spices of your choice, before cooking. This creates a seal over the meat which helps keep moisture in.
